How to Care for your Brimroad Hat
You’re now the proud owner of a truly special piece — handmade, thoughtfully designed, and made to turn heads. Don't be afraid to wear your Brimroad hat - from everyday errands or on your next adventure. Here are simple care guidelines to help keep your hat looking timeless.
General Hat Tips
Try to handle your hat by the brim, not the crown to help keep the shape. When you're not wearing your hat, it's best to lie it flat with the brim side down. Our felt and wool hat brims are ironed and pressed flat, so it’s also ok to store it on a flat surface, like a dresser top. That will ensure the brim stays flat.
Fur Felt and Wool Hat Care
The natural fur and wool fibers are relatively forgiving and allow for easy care.
Dust and Dirt: Each Brimroad hat comes with a hat sponge. Brush the brim and crown of your hat with the hat sponge in a counterclockwise direction. This will get any light dirt and dust off your hat.
Stain or Spots: If you have stain or spot on your hat, you can use the sponge to scrub it more vigorously. Gentle steam from a steamer or a tea kettle can help with more stubborn dirt as well. When dealing with mud, allow the mud to dry completely, this will make it much easier to brush the dried dirt off.
Deep Stains: When you need even more help than a sponge and steam, use fine grit sandpaper to gently rub the stain out. Then finish cleaning it with the sponge to get the dust off.
Grease Spots: Never use liquid laundry stain removers or cleaners on your hat. If your hat has grease or oil on it, use cornstarch to absorb the grease. Make sure the hat is dry when sprinkling the cornstarch. Leave it for several hours, then brush away the powder with your hat sponge. Repeat if necessary.
Straw Hat Care
To clean your straw hat, use a mild soap and a soft rag or sponge to gently scrub out stains. Let your hat dry at room temperature.
If Your Hat Gets Wet
Coypu fur fibers are organically water-repellant, but try to avoid getting the hat too wet as that might affect the silk or leather bands, the feathers, as well as the shape of the hat. If your hat does gets wet, shake off excess water and let it rest flat at room temperature. Don’t use a heater or dryer as that will affect the shape. If your hat becomes misshapen, please send me an email tara@brimroad.com, and I will help you reshape it!
